In the mathematics module, we explore the teacher’s role in supporting young children’s early concepts of number and early addition and subtraction. We also examine the early childhood roots of patterning and algebraic reasoning, geometric reasoning through children’s play and how measurement and data analysis can be taught through developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant activity. Strong emphasis is placed on supporting diverse learners through intentional teaching and differentiated instruction.

This course is based on 4 course sessions taught in regional locations to groups of early childhood educators. The Department of education has published new Early Learning Standards for all the disciplines including math. Standards are new for the early childhood community to be thinking about as they plan curriculum. In this course, the standards for math will be understood as a framework along with developmentally and culturally appropriate practices. This course will allow early childhood educators to explore the concepts that preschool-aged children are acquiring, practicing and refining in the mathematical areas of number sense and quantification, algebra and geometry. Educators will also have the opportunity to explore and practice a variety of teaching skills and strategies that support young children's construction of important mathematical concepts. Teachers will strengthen their skills in building upon children's incidental learning in intentional and specific ways represented in the pre-kindergarten indicators for Ohio Learning Content Standards for Mathematics.

Standards are new for the early childhood community to be thinking about as they plan curriculum. In this course, the standards for math will be understood as a framework along with developmentally and culturally appropriate practices. In this module, early childhood educators will think deeply about the opportunities and support that they provide children to mathematically approach situations involving: organizing and analyzing numeric information (operations and data analysis), grouping items systematically (algebra), and measuring. Finally, participants will reflect on their classrooms as a whole, recognizing that all areas of mathematics are interconnected and can be supported in multiple ways when the early educator can recognize math in action in young children's world.

The science module will emphasize the “big idea” that early childhood science experiences are integrated into a child’s everyday life and into the environment instead of set up at a science table in the classroom/ center or planned as a separate science lesson. Science is also integrated with art, literacy, music, social studies and math. Across the four sessions, the standards and benchmarks for earth and space sciences, life sciences, and physical sciences will be explored. Process standards are always considered along with content standards. All experiences are designed for the participation of diverse learners.

Social Studies is the study of who we are and how we connect with our family and our community. This includes economics, the study of the choices that we make about production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Although the concepts may sound more sophisticated than the average preschooler can comprehend, this module will explore the knowledge that preschool-aged children already have and are building on about decisions involving what they and others around them have, want and need. The module will also build educators' knowledge and skill in ways of supporting that growing understanding in the children in their own classrooms and programs.

This module closely represents two social studies disciplines from Ohio's early learning social studies content standards; Civics and Government. The National Council of Social Studies (NCSS) recognizes the importance of these content standards by defining the primary purpose of social studies..."to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world" (NCSS Task Force on Standards for Teaching and Learning in the Social Studies, 1993, p.213).

This course is based on 4 course sessions through 12 contact hours taught in regional locations to groups of early childhood educators. This module is grounded in the belief that all children are born ready to learn and possess strengths, abilities and competencies. A comprehensive early childhood curriculum engages all children and enlists them as active partners in its creation. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is a tool to access curriculum for young children with disabilities and to support their full participation. This module requires a shift from the practice that has viewed the IEP as the curriculum for the young child with disabilities.

  Instructor/Contact: James Flanigan/Susan Jones Ashland University sjones3@ashland.edu
This course is a 3 session module available to early childhood audiences across the state of Ohio. The content is aimed at preparing for pre-service and in-service level early childhood educators who can be better prepared  to address the needs of English Language Learners (ELL's). These efforts are targeted for educators and administrators of preschool-age children as well as those in K-12. Early childhood audiences are becoming more sensitive to the cultural backgrounds of children and their families and the importance of implementing culturally responsive pedagogies. With more ELLs entering their classrooms, they seek guidance as to how best to educate children from homes in which a language other than English is spoken and to prepare these ELLs for their transition inot kindergarten or elementary school. these sessions are representative of Ohio's efforts to educate early childhood educators, administrators and other stakeholders about meeting the needs of English Language Learners.

This newly created, 30 contact hour course is a comprehensive overview of the areas of early childhood research and practice related to cognitive development-those processes, skills and dispositions that are necessary for all learning. This module has been developed to assist in understanding the ways in which early childhood educators can provide quality learning experiences and intentional teaching strategies that appropriately support both approaches toward learning (engagement, curiosity, initiative and creativity) and cognitive development (executive functions, attention and problem solving) as young children construct content knowledge in mathematics, science and social studies. While the module is designed for early childhood educators working primarily with preschool-aged children, the module will explore the continuum of cognitive development from birth to kindergarten.

Course Objectives: This course will incorporate principles of inclusive early childhoos practices and elements of effective, reflective, professional development. The following big ideas and threads will be reviewed throughout the course:

  • Play as the vehicle for learning
